Bike rentals are available if you want to explore further along the Pinellas Trail, and golf carts are a popular way for locals to get around too.

Once you’re here, you barely need a car. Most of what makes Dunedin special is walkable, and the Pinellas Trail runs right through the heart of downtown if you want to range further. Several shops along the trail rent electric bikes — Honeymoon Island is a breezy 15-minute ride up to the causeway, and the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are about 10 miles north if you’re feeling ambitious.

The Jolley Trolley’s Coastal Route connects Dunedin south to Clearwater Beach and north all the way to Tarpon Springs, seven days a week. The Clearwater Ferry runs from Dunedin Marina to downtown Clearwater and Clearwater Beach — free parking at the marina, possible dolphins en route. Check their site for current schedules.

Yes — golf carts are a genuine part of local life here. They’re permitted on any city road posted at 30 mph or less, which covers most of downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. The City of Dunedin has an interactive golf cart map so you can see exactly where you’re allowed to go. Drivers 18 and older need a valid photo ID to operate one on public roads. Honeymoon Island is just a few miles from downtown Dunedin, at the western end of the Dunedin Causeway. You can bike the Pinellas trail from downtown (about 2.5 miles), or take a rideshare. There’s a per-vehicle entrance fee to the state park, which is worth every cent — you’re looking at over four miles of Gulf beach, a nature trail through one of Florida’s last virgin slash pine forests, and the ferry dock for Caladesi Island. The Caladesi Island Ferry departs from inside Honeymoon Island State Park. You’ll drive or bike to Honeymoon first, pay the park entrance fee, then follow signs to the ferry dock. The ride over to Caladesi takes about 20 minutes through the calm waters of St. Joseph Sound and is an experience in itself. The ferry runs daily and operates on a regular schedule, with more frequent departures on weekends and from mid-February through Labor Day. Tickets are purchased at the booth at Honeymoon Island. Kayakers can also paddle over from the Dunedin Causeway, with rentals available at Sail Honeymoon on the causeway — about a 15-minute paddle.
